Batik Tanah Process
Batik Tanah connects textile craft with the colours, textures and stories of Lembah Bujang. The process is not only about producing cloth; it is also about interpreting place, memory and natural tone.
Each artisan may use different techniques, but the general workflow below explains how ideas are developed into a finished work.
Heritage inspiration
Motifs may begin from candi forms and other Kedah Tua-era heritage, river lines, local flora, earth texture, archaeological memory or community stories.
Sketch and composition
The artisan plans the layout, balance and repeated elements before wax work begins.
Wax drawing
Canting or block methods are used to control lines and create areas that resist colour.
Earth-tone colouring
Colours are selected to reflect the Tanah theme, usually using warm, grounded and natural visual references.
Drying and fixing
The cloth is dried carefully and finished according to the chosen material and dye method.
Review and storytelling
The final work is photographed, described and submitted for review before public display.
